Explore the rise of early civilisations

Our early civilisations tours explore the development of palaces, writing and long-distance trade. On Crete you walk the great Minoan palaces and discover a civilisation whose influence carried on into ancient Greece. In Egypt you move from the pharaonic tombs of Upper Egypt to the museums at Giza and Alexandria, exploring discoveries that continue to illuminate the past. In Italy you meet the Etruscans, who flourished across a group of city states and helped shape the Roman world. And further east you reach Petra, the incense city of Sumhuram in Oman, and Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand along the Silk Road.

You travel with expert Guide Lecturers, archaeologists and Egyptologists who excavate and research in these places, love sharing what they know, and can set a single site within the wider story of the civilisation that built it.

Palaces, writing, cities and trade: explore the extraordinary inventions through which ancient societies built increasingly connected worlds.

Egypt - Land of the Pharaohs

Egypt - Land of the Pharaohs

From the Delta to the first Cataract Howard Carter’s description of his first sight into Tutankhamun tomb is also a fitting description of Andante’s exploration of the archaeology of this amazing country. Egypt is indeed a land of ‘wonderful things’, a country where adjectives are insufficient to describe the monuments and experiences which are not to be found anywhere else in the world. This epic tour encompasses all of these iconic sites and so much more, as we take a journey of a lifetime through Upper and Lower Egypt, travelling through the millennia.

Crete - Introducing the Minoans

Crete - Introducing the Minoans

An expert-led tour that traverses Crete from East to West Crete became a dominant power in the Mediterranean in the 3rd millennium BCE, when the people we refer to as Minoans constructed palaces on a scale not known in Europe at the time. This tour, which traverses Crete from East to West, has it all: stunning archaeology, beautiful coastal villages, delightful towns and dramatic landscapes, accompanied by the island’s wonderful cuisine.

Turkey: From Catal Höyuk to Gobekli Tepe

Turkey: From Catal Höyuk to Gobekli Tepe

A journey through Cappadocia and south east Turkey Join us on a kaleidoscopic journey through the heartlands of Turkey from Çatal Hüyük, arguably the earliest city in the world, to Göbekli Tepe, a remarkable early Neolithic complex in upper Mesopotamia. We discover the otherworldly geology of Cappadocia, a bizarrely beautiful landscape matched by its unique archaeology, underground cities and vividly frescoed churches and the elaborate ritual sites of the ancient kingdoms in South East Turkey. We travel through The Fertile Crescent, arcing around the flat lands of Mesopotamia, which saw the birth of agriculture and the first domestication of cattle, goats, sheep and pigs, and we see the spectacular Roman mosaics in Gaziantep, rescued from the flood waters of a dam on the nearby Euphrates. Our journey includes an astonishing array of world-class sites, four of them UNESCO listed, as we chart the many civilisations which rose and fell here over the millennia.

Early civilisations tours: your questions answered

None at all. These tours suit everyone from the merely curious to scholars and academics, and everyone in between. All that's needed is an interest in the past. The specialists travelling with you build up a picture during the holiday, and their role is to really help you understand the story of the past.

Archaeologists, Egyptologists and historians who work in these regions themselves. Standing in a decorated tomb with an experienced Egyptologist, or walking a Minoan palace with someone who can explain what the excavation actually showed, is a different experience from reading the sign at the entrance.

Principally the Minoans, the Etruscans, dynastic Egypt, the Thracians, the Nuraghic culture of Sardinia and the trading civilisations of Arabia and the Silk Road. Several tours are built around a single culture, others trace how one influenced the next.

Not entirely. Many of these places were occupied for millennia, so a single site can carry Bronze Age, Classical, Byzantine and medieval layers on top of each other. Cyprus is a good example, with occupation running back more than 10,000 years, and reading those layers in sequence is part of what the specialists do.

Sites are often extensive, unshaded and on uneven ground, and some involve steps or slopes in warm conditions. Each itinerary carries an activity level of light, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Very much so, and many guests travel solo. Shared interest naturally leads to easy conversation, and friendships formed on tour often outlast it.

For Egypt, Jordan and Arabia the cooler months from autumn through early spring are far more comfortable. Mediterranean itineraries suit spring and autumn, when sites are quieter and the heat is manageable. Each tour is timed accordingly.
