Discover the Europe beyond the obvious

Our tours across the rest of Europe reach countries that repay the effort of getting to them. Bulgaria has come through a golden age for archaeological discoveries and now holds Neolithic settlements, Thracian tombs and exuberantly painted medieval churches. Albania's ancient cities at Durrës, Apollonia, Butrint and Byllis sit among mountains and deep blue sea. Serbia's Danube lands were home to the Illyrians and the Serbs, and the sites run from remote prehistory forward. Malta's stone temples were raised 5,000 years ago. In Poland, Warsaw, Torun and Gdansk trace a story from the medieval Baltic to the twentieth century, and in Scandinavia the Viking homelands record a trading network that reached from Greenland to Baghdad.

Each tour here is built around one shared interest, whether that's archaeology, history or gardens, and you travel with specialists who love sharing it.

Europe’s great stories reach far beyond its familiar capitals, through Thracian tombs, prehistoric temples and the sea routes of the Vikings.

Prehistoric Malta & Gozo

Prehistoric Malta & Gozo

Malta’s first inhabitants The island of Malta might be small but it certainly packs a big punch in historical terms. In the struggle for dominion of the Mediterranean it has played a key role in centuries of sparring between the east and west. Enduring occupation from the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, Hospitallers, French, and British, it has a colourful and complex heritage. Our focus, however, is on its earliest and most extraordinary occupation when some 5000 years ago this tiny archipelago was home to an astonishing culture which created elaborate stone temples and rock cut tombs. A thousand years before the Great Pyramid at Giza was erected, people on the tiny island of Malta were moving stones weighing up to 50 tonnes to make huge stone temples. Among the oldest ritual structures in the world, the number of them is astounding and in their complexity must have required considerable planning and organisation. Join us as we explore some of the island’s most extraordinary archaeology of a sophistication, character, and quantity unparalleled elsewhere.

Rest of Europe tours: your questions answered

Everywhere in Europe outside our named destinations, including Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Malta, Sweden and Denmark.

Only because each has a smaller number of tours than the destinations with pages of their own. Several are among the most rewarding places we travel, precisely because fewer visitors reach them.

Some involve longer journeys and more remote sites, and a few are explicit about being off the beaten track. Each itinerary sets out what it involves, and there are gentler options, including a tour based in Split with Diocletian's Palace at its heart.

Spring and autumn for the Mediterranean and Balkan itineraries, when sites are quieter and the walking is more comfortable. Scandinavian and Baltic tours run through the lighter months.

Archaeological sites mean uneven ground, steps and little shade, and some of these are extensive. Each itinerary carries an activity level of easy, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Yes, and many guests do. Shared interest does most of the work, and conversation tends to start with whatever you have just seen.
