Discover the wonders of ancient Egypt

Our Egypt tours explore an ancient world whose story is still unfolding, with Egyptian-led excavations at Saqqara revealing remarkable tombs. The renovated Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria and the now-open Grand Egyptian Museum have added fresh reasons to visit. Cairo sits at the apex of the Nile Delta, and just beyond its sprawl lie Memphis, capital of the Old Kingdom, and the vast cemeteries of Saqqara and Giza. Travelling south brings you to Luxor and Karnak, with the Valley of the Kings across the river, then Aswan and, further south, Abu Simbel on the shores of Lake Nasser. Between Esna and Aswan, a traditional dahabiya offers a slower passage, with opportunities to moor at quieter places along the river.

Each Egypt tour is built around a shared interest, whether that’s archaeology, ancient history or gardens, with specialists who reveal the connections between the monuments, the landscape and the lives of the people who shaped them.

From painted tombs to temples on the Nile, Egypt brings you face to face with a civilisation’s extraordinary vision of life, power and eternity.

Egypt - Land of the Pharaohs

Egypt - Land of the Pharaohs

From the Delta to the first Cataract Howard Carter’s description of his first sight into Tutankhamun tomb is also a fitting description of Andante’s exploration of the archaeology of this amazing country. Egypt is indeed a land of ‘wonderful things’, a country where adjectives are insufficient to describe the monuments and experiences which are not to be found anywhere else in the world. This epic tour encompasses all of these iconic sites and so much more, as we take a journey of a lifetime through Upper and Lower Egypt, travelling through the millennia.

Essential Cairo

Essential Cairo

Ancient wonders renewed Although the modern city was founded in the 10th century, Cairo’s setting at the apex of the Nile Delta has made it a focal point of power for far longer. Just beyond its urban sprawl lie the ruins of Memphis, capital of the Old Kingdom, and the vast cemeteries of Saqqara and Giza, landscapes in which the very vocabulary of kingship, monumentality and sacred geometry was first articulated in stone. Our tour to Cairo is designed as both an invitation and a rediscovery. For those visiting Egypt for the first time, the city offers an incomparable initiation into the ancient world. For returning travellers, this city is equally compelling.

Egypt tours: your questions answered

Egyptologists and archaeologists who research and excavate in Egypt. There is nothing quite like examining a decorated tomb with someone who can explain what the images meant to the people who commissioned them.

Several do. Some travel by cruise boat between Luxor and Aswan, and the Upper Egypt itinerary uses a traditional dahabiya, which is small enough to moor at sites the larger vessels cannot reach.

No. Alongside Giza, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, there are the collections of the Grand Egyptian Museum, Alexandria’s Greco-Roman heritage and the decorated tombs of Saqqara. There are also itineraries exploring gardens and the role of plants in ancient Egyptian life.

The cooler months, from autumn through to early spring. Egyptian summers are extremely hot for walking open sites, and our tours are timed accordingly.

A good deal, on sand, uneven stone and steps, often in strong sun and with little shade. Tomb interiors can involve low passages and confined spaces. Each itinerary carries an activity level of easy, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Yes, and many guests do. Shared interest does most of the work, and conversation tends to start with whatever you have just seen.
