Discover a crossroads of cultures

Our Morocco tours explore a country known to Arab geographers as the Maghreb el-Aqsa, the land of the further west, between the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Sahara’s sea of sand. From the north to Marrakesh, its imperial cities reveal the ambitions and artistry of successive ruling dynasties. In Marrakesh itself, the lively Jemaa el-Fna, the courtyards of Bahia Palace and the bold colours and planting of the Majorelle Garden offer very different expressions of the city’s character. Beyond the city, the Ourika Valley leads into the foothills of the High Atlas.

Each Morocco tour is built around a shared interest in history or gardens, with specialists who help you see how architecture, planting and landscape tell the country’s story.

Morocco’s meeting of cultures finds extraordinary expression in its cities and gardens, from the scale of imperial architecture to the intimacy of a tiled courtyard.

Gardens of Marrakech

Gardens of Marrakech

The timeless city of Marrakech has an enduring appeal, with its low-rise pink and red buildings set against the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Its beating heart is the square of Jemaa El Fna, where musicians and storytellers and snake-charmers act out compelling scenes which have changed little over the centuries, with visitors irresistibly drawn here. Highlights include the serene courtyards of El Bahia Palace, the dramatic ruins of El Badi, the Menara gardens and the vibrant Majorelle Garden. We also escape to the peaceful Ourika Valley in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains to round off this tour.

Morocco tours: your questions answered

Two strands. One follows the medieval dynasties and Imperial Cities from the north down to Marrakesh, and the other is built around the gardens and architecture of Marrakesh itself.

In Marrakesh’s courtyard gardens, water, shade and enclosure create a welcome retreat from the heat and bustle outside. Fountains, scented planting and geometric layouts appeal to the senses while drawing on a long Islamic garden tradition. Seeing how these elements work together is part of the pleasure of exploring with a specialist.

Spring and autumn. Marrakesh and the interior are very hot in high summer, and the gardens are at their best either side of it.

Medinas mean narrow, uneven streets and crowds, palaces and gardens mean standing and steps, and the heat adds to it. Each itinerary carries an activity level of easy, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Yes, and many guests do. Shared interest does most of the work, and conversation tends to start with whatever you have just seen.
