Built to be remembered

Our historic houses tours travel to buildings that were raised to make a point, and are still making it. In western Scotland you follow a landscape shaped by power, faith and imagination, from aristocratic estates to ancient fortresses and sacred medieval ruins along a dramatic coastline. In the east you trace the story of Mary, Queen of Scots through the palaces and castles of Linlithgow, Falkland and Loch Leven. In Northumberland you stand beneath Bamburgh above the sea, walk the state rooms of Alnwick, the Windsor of the North, and cross to the holy island of Lindisfarne. Further south you explore the country houses of County Durham and North Yorkshire, and the great estates and gardens of England.

You travel with friendly and professional Tour Managers who love sharing what they know, including historians and lecturers in decorative and fine arts on some tours. At many of the historic properties we visit, we'll be guided by people who know these houses and their collections inside out.

Behind every grand façade are stories of the people who built, shaped and lived in these remarkable places.

Highlights of Northumberland

Highlights of Northumberland

A trip to Northumberland's low-lying coast and expansive landscapes is always delightful, especially when combined with visits to its historic houses, castles, and Roman ruins. Among these, the most striking is Bamburgh Castle, perched dramatically on a rocky plateau near the Farne Islands. Other highlights include the holy island of Lindisfarne, featuring its castle and priory, and Belsay Hall, a 19th-century Greek Revival masterpiece built with stone from its own quarry, later transformed into a distinctive garden. Wallington House, dating back to 1688, also offers a fine garden. Alnwick Castle, known as the "Windsor of the North," is England's second-largest inhabited castle. Visitors can explore the castle and its neighboring garden. Additionally, don't miss Hadrian’s Wall, one of Britain’s most significant Roman sites, and the well-preserved Roman cavalry fort, Chester’s Fort.

Historic house tours: your questions answered

Furniture, paintings, porcelain, textiles, libraries and the accumulated possessions of families who stayed put for generations. Many collections were assembled over centuries and remain in the rooms they were bought for, which is rarer than it sounds and quite different from seeing the same objects in a museum.

Friendly and professional Tour Managers, including on some tours historians and lecturers in decorative and fine arts. At many of the properties we visit we are guided by people who know these houses and their collections inside out, and understanding why a room was arranged as it was, or what a piece of furniture cost when it was new, is where these tours earn their keep.

Both, though the lesser-known ones are often the point. Several itineraries are built specifically around houses that don't appear on the usual circuit, and they tend to be quieter, more personal and easier to look at properly.

It varies by property, and some rooms prohibit it entirely to protect light-sensitive textiles and paintings. Your Tour Manager will know the rules at each house, and where photography isn't permitted, there is usually a good conservation reason for it.

House visits mean walking on hard floors for extended periods, often with stairs and no lift, and the gardens and estates add more. Each itinerary sets out what to expect before you book.

Very much so, and many guests travel solo. Shared interest naturally leads to easy conversation, and a group looking at the same room tends to fall into conversation without much prompting.

Spring through autumn, since most houses close or reduce their opening over winter and the gardens and parkland around them are worth the extra time. Late spring and early autumn tend to be quietest.
