A land of legends

Our Wales tours travel a country whose past sits close to the surface. Anglesey, or Ynys Môn, is separated from the mainland by the narrow Menai Strait and holds significant concentrations of Neolithic burial chambers, Bronze Age standing stones and Iron Age hillforts in a small area. In the south, the parks and gardens of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire include the National Botanic Garden of Wales, the first botanic garden created in the UK in two centuries. And in the north, Snowdonia's mountains and coast sit alongside historic castles and gardens including Plas Brondanw and Maenan Hall.

Each Wales tour is built around one shared interest, whether that's gardens or archaeology, and you travel with specialists who love sharing it.

From ancient burial chambers to gardens framed by mountains, the Welsh landscape tells stories of belief, ambition and imagination.

The Archaeology of Anglesey

The Archaeology of Anglesey

Anglesey, or Ynys Môn, occupies a fascinating place in the archaeological story of Britain. Separated from mainland Wales by the narrow Menai Strait, this compact island contains an extraordinary concentration of Neolithic burial chambers, Bronze Age standing stones and Iron Age hillforts. It was also the setting for a dramatic encounter between the Roman army and the Celtic druids, vividly recorded by the Roman historian Tacitus. Around the island, ancient monuments sit alongside medieval churches and later landscapes, revealing how places were reused and reshaped over centuries. From the mysterious chambered tombs of Bryn Celli Ddu and Barclodiad y Gawres to formidable castles on the mainland, the archaeology of Anglesey offers an unusually rich opportunity to see thousands of years of history within a remarkably small area.

Wales tours: your questions answered

Gardens and archaeology, principally. The garden tours take in the National Botanic Garden of Wales alongside private and historic gardens, and the archaeology focuses on Anglesey, where prehistoric sites are unusually concentrated.

Expert Tour Managers who bring their own specialism, including garden writers and archaeologists who know these landscapes and have worked in them.

Spring through early autumn for the gardens, when planting is at its peak and the coast and mountains are at their best. Archaeological sites are accessible for more of the year, though exposed ground is easier going outside winter.

Gardens mean grass, gravel and uneven paths, and prehistoric sites in Wales often sit on open ground reached on foot. Each itinerary carries an activity level of easy, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Yes, and many guests do. Shared interest does most of the work, and conversation tends to start with whatever you have just seen.
